SITA Trust's work in Great Blakenham

SITA Trust is an ethical funding organisation dedicated to making lasting improvements to the natural environment and community life.

A not-for-profit company, the Trust is a registered and accredited environmental body that operates under the Landfill Communities Fund, distributing money donated by SITA UK.

Between 1997 - when SITA Trust began its funding programmes - and the end of 2013, SITA Trust supported more than 3,500 projects to a combined value of more than £99 million. It continues to provide funding around the UK thanks to SITA UK’s financial support.

SITA Trust currently runs the following funding programmes:

  • Enhancing Communities - for community improvement projects within three miles of qualifying SITA UK sites (of which the facility at Great Blakenham is one). There are 'qualifying zones' in England, Scotland and Wales.
  • Enriching Nature - an England-wide programme that supports biodiversity conservation projects.

In the first two years of the funding being available around Great Blakenham, 10 projects received over £200,000.

In February 2013, Great Blakenham Village Hall received over £57,000 towards the cost of redecoration - inside and out, new curtains, new cookers and the complete refurbishment of the play area outside. Six bikes, available for people to borrow so they can try out the cycle speedway track, were also bought.

Others to receive funding in 2013 were the Bramford Royal British Legion – with over £17,000 for a new flat roof and air conditioning, the Bramford Tennis Club – with around £11,500 to upgrade the tennis courts and the Gipping Valley Bowls Club – with nearly £12,000 for refurbishment of the club house and changing facilities.

Applicants are able to check whether their project is eligible for funding and make an application through the Trust’s website. The site includes online application forms and downloadable application guides. A handy postcode checker enables applicants to see if their project site falls within one of the Qualifying Zones for Enhancing Communities funding.
